Bringing African Stories to Literary Spaces

At Gemspread Publishing, we believe that every exceptional creative voice deserves a platform to be heard. That’s why we created Ma Kẹkẹ, a periodic publication that serves as a beacon for aspiring and emerging African writers.

Available in both print and digital formats, Ma Kẹkẹ is dedicated to nurturing a healthy literary writing culture. Its unique focus is on promoting African voices and offering a system of compensation for contributors.

    What is Ma Kẹkẹ?

Ma Kẹkẹ goes beyond being just a magazine; it’s a spotlight on the continent's socio-political and cultural experiences and ideas. Through this publication, we highlight the nuances of the African life, giving space to stories that might otherwise remain unheard.

Whether exploring a community’s traditions, tackling pressing social issues, or diving into the complexities of being African in contemporary society, Ma Kẹkẹ is all about spotlighting these rich, diverse narratives.

Expanding Our Reach: Where to Find Ma Kẹkẹ

Harmattan: A New Imprint from Gemspread Publishing-image

Harmattan: A New Imprint from Gemspread Publishing

We are thrilled to announce the launch of our new imprint, Harmattan, which promises to celebrate and elevate the richness of authentic African storytelling.

With Harmattan, we aim to create a platform that brings these voices to the forefront, offering readers compelling narratives that reflect the diverse and vibrant tapestry of African experiences.

    A Vision Guided by Expertise

Shalom Shaba, our esteemed Director of Publishing at Gemspread Publishing and the Editor of Ma Kẹkẹ, will manage the Harmattan imprint. With her extensive experience and passion for publishing, Shalom is poised to guide Harmattan in becoming a home for stories that speak to the continent's heart and diaspora. Her vision aligns seamlessly with our mission of pushing boundaries in the publishing world, ensuring that every title published under Harmattan resonates with authenticity and creativity.

In addition, the publishing of Harmattan will be overseen by Israel Peters, whose credentials include his role as a former editor at MDPI UK and an editorial board member at The Literary Platform, UK. With Israel’s keen editorial insight and deep appreciation for literature, we are confident that Harmattan will produce works that uphold the highest standards of storytelling while nurturing fresh voices that deserve a global stage.

    Why ‘Harmattan’?

The name Harmattan carries deep significance in West Africa. It is known as a season marked by the dry and dusty trade winds blowing from the Sahara, coinciding with a time of celebration and reflection. It’s a season that heralds change, bringing with it the promise of new beginnings. In the same spirit, the Harmattan imprint aims to deliver high-quality literary works that arrive like a seasonal breeze—refreshing, invigorating, and filled with the spirit of the African experience.

We envision Harmattan as a space where each publication feels like a cherished moment, a gift to our readers. We plan to publish approximately five titles yearly, each one carefully selected to ensure a diverse array of voices and stories that will captivate and inspire. Our commitment is to create a lasting impact, one story at a time, as we shape a collection of works that will resonate with readers both on the continent and beyond.

    What to Expect from Harmattan

Harmattan will become the home of all our currently published books, adding them to the rich tapestry of stories that will continue to grow under this imprint. With each title, we aim to highlight the beauty, complexity, and depth of African narratives.

    So, what’s next?
